Jesse Gilbert

Jesse Gilbert is an award winning filmmaker from the Beara peninsula in Ireland. His work spans both narrative fiction and documentary, taking inspiration from the landscape and people of his native region. These stories focus upon rural communities and peripheral lives.  He has been named an emerging talent by Canon-Nahemi and was shortlisted for the Bingham-Ray new talent award 2024. His screenwriting has been awarded by the Irish writers guild and his recent documentary, Gleann, is currently screening at festivals. He is the current filmmaker in residence in the county of Kerry where he works intergenerationally with those interested in filmmaking.

 

The Whale

Amidst the bitter rivalry between two villages, we follow the friendship of two children from opposing sides.  One morning, while playing on the shore, the young friends find a beached whale. 

As each of their communities tries to lay claim to the discovery, the two friends are torn apart.
