La Malaisienne Amanda Nell Eu a participé au programme international LIM | Less is More du Groupe Ouest pour le développement de son long-métrage « Tiger Stripes » en 2018.

Synopsis

Zaffan, 12 ans, commence à ressentir des changements physiques horribles dans son corps. Luttant pour rester normale à l’école, Zaffan nie ces changements inévitables et tente de cacher son moi grotesque. Son corps atteint cependant un état où elle n’est plus capable de le cacher, et elle est humiliée devant toute sa classe. Alors que ses amis se retournent contre elle et l’attaquent, l’hystérie se déclenche – une par une, les adolescentes tombent par terre dans des convulsions et une épidémie d’hystérie de masse se répand alors dans toute l’école. Les rumeurs sur la monstrueuse transformation de Zaffan la font craindre par tout le monde. Pour tenter de chasser le démon qui sommeille en elle, Zaffan est contrainte à un exorcisme impliquant des méthodes extrêmes de honte et de torture. Et comme un tigre qui a été traîné hors de son habitat et piqué parce que nous le craignons, parce que nous ne le connaissons pas, Zaffan se lève finalement et décide de révéler à tout le monde ce qu’elle a caché – sa vraie nature, sa colère, sa rage et sa beauté.

Intentions

I remember being terrified when I went through puberty. As a women, there have always been elements of shame when it comes to our bodies and I think this begins with the physical transformations as we become adults.

We are not taught to embrace these changes. We are told that once we are “women”, we must protect our modesty and behave differently. These bodily changes are difficult for a child, the sudden appearance of patches of hair, bones protruding, skin stretching. I think most people would say it’s almost like a horror film. This story is a parable using horror of the body and femininity to convey the core theme of the film which is that every single one of us, as human beings, are all trying to hide our inner monster, our true selves. We are taught to fear this, to be ashamed of it and to reject it. Zaffan’s inner monster – her inner strength and beauty – is coming out and she has to learn to face and accept her true and wonderful self.
